Tempe Receives $125,000 Grant Award to Provide Work Opportunities to the Developmentally Disabled

This fall the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council released more than $260,000 in grant awards for projects for Arizonans with developmental disabilities as part of its latest funding cycle.

The largest award of nearly $125,000 went to the City of Tempe for a project that will provide work opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities.

The nonprofit Southwest Institute for Families and Children received $60,000 to lead a coalition of groups that support the legal rights of people with disabilities to make choices for themselves.

“People with disabilities are often excluded from many opportunities,” said Erica McFadden, executive director of the Council. “By putting out these grants we hope to promote successful examples of how communities can better include those with disabilities.”

Rural and urban sites in Yuma, Coconino, Santa Cruz, and Maricopa counties will be impacted by the diverse projects.

The Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council serves as Arizona’s innovation lab for residents with developmental disabilities along with their families, providing education, advocacy, research and support to projects that accomplish our three current goals: increasing employment opportunities, encouraging individuals to advocate for themselves and creating inclusive communities for everyone.
