League Welcomes Policy Pension Analyst to Staff

The League recently added the position of Pension Policy Analyst to its staff to assist cities and towns with pension issues, particularly relating to the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System.

Nick Ponder joined League Staff on June 15. He previously served as Government Relations Officer with the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).

“For many cities and towns, the public safety pension cost is their largest single General Fund expenditure,” said Ken Strobeck, Executive Director of the League. “Nick will be of great assistance to those grappling with how to manage their unfunded liability and with the implementation of recent reforms to the system,” he added.

In addition, Mr. Ponder will be monitoring legislation relating to pension issues for the League as well as other related topics.

Mr. Ponder has been with ASRS for eight years and was previously Associate Retirement Benefits Examiner for the Fire Department of New York. He earned his degree in International Relations from The Ohio State University.

“I am excited to join the League, learn from their expertise, and add value to an already reputable team,” he said. “Additionally, I look forward to closely engaging with the cities and towns in implementing recent pension reforms and addressing their pension-related concerns going forward. I would also like to thank Paul Matson and the ASRS for an amazing 8 years of learning and growth without whom this opportunity might not be possible.”
