League Training: Identifying and Writing Municipal Grants

Focus: This training is a hands-on follow up to the February 20 grant seeking class held at the League. The focus of this workshop is to help municipal staff and governing body members learn how to gather information for, and start to write, a specific grant application for a municipal project.

When: Wednesday, June 5, 2019
Location: League of Arizona Cities and Towns, Room 101
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (with working lunch)
Cost: $120 (materials and lunch are included).

Class size is limited to the first 25 registrants.

Applied Learning Topics:

  • Pre-writing information gathering (what is the project, why do you need this project funded, and where is the evidence of the need?).
  • Discussing the main narrative sections of a grant application (applies to government and foundation grants).
  • Writing the statement of need, plan of action, evaluation plan, and management plan.
  • Discussing budget requirements (summaries and narratives).

Takeaways:

  • Learning how to identify information needed to write the grant application narrative and develop the budget sections.
  • Experiencing the time-on-task effort needed to write an award-winning grant application for a municipal project.
  • Understanding the importance of having more than one person working on a grant application.
  • Learning how to avoid red flags in the budget sections of a grant application.

Preparedness:

Please bring your laptop, power cord, power strip (to share with others), and have some background information on a municipal project in need of funding. This is a hands-on interactive grant writing session. Be prepared to research on the Internet on your computer and complete writing exercises in your word processing software. Dr. Bev’s handouts will be on a USB drive. You will not need to access the drive during the Internet research and writing activities. All guidance will be on the PowerPoint screen.

Writing paper will be provided by your trainer. Pens, if needed, will be provided by the League.
