The City of Phoenix purchased Sky Harbor International Airport on July 16, 1935. The 285 acres of land were purchased from the Acme Investment Company for $100,000 and was nicknamed “The Farm” for its then rural location. Terminal 1 opened in 1952. Sky Harbor now sees more than 25 million travelers each year. Read more.

Tempe’s iconic Hayden Flour Mill was built in 1918 and began operations on July 10, 1918. Built by a prominent valley concrete contractor, J.C. Steele, the building is the oldest, cast-in-place, reinforced concrete building in Tempe.
Bay State Milling stopped operation at the mill on April 1, 1998, ending the longest run of continuous use for an industrial building in the Valley.
