Arizona City and Town Attorneys Receive International Awards

In October at the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA) Annual Conference, two Arizona municipal attorneys, Kimberly McIntier Campbell (Scottsdale) and Daniel R. White (Yuma) received the Daniel J. Curtin Young Public Lawyer Award. This prestigious award recognizes a young public law practitioner who has provided outstanding legal service to the public and who possesses an exemplary reputation in the legal community, the highest ethical standards and maintains a life that balances professional excellence and the joy of family and friends. IMLA is an association of 2,500 members worldwide and Arizona is proud that two of our assistant attorneys were recognized for this honor. Both recipients are also graduates of Arizona State University, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

Kimberly McIntier Campbell, City of Scottsdale

Kim has been an assistant city attorney with the Scottsdale City Attorney’s Office for approximately two years and had previously interned at the Office. She also worked in the Municipal Law Section at Gust Rosenfeld and clerked at the Arizona Court of Appeals. In addition to her excellent legal work, poise and professionalism, Kim also serves on the Board of Gabriel’s Angels Board of Young Professionals, an organization that uses pet therapy teams to deliver healing pet therapy to at-risk children, nurturing their emotional development and enhancing the quality of their lives. She has also volunteered with the children at the City of Scottsdale’s Mighty Mud Mania event.

Bruce Washburn, City Attorney for Scottsdale, stated in his nomination of Kim that she "has legal skills that you would expect to find in someone with many more years of practice, and a passion for the work she does that is immediately obvious not only to those of us who work with her, but also to the numerous other City employees she interacts with on a regular basis…and she has shown a willingness to share her expertise…always being willing to take the time to explain matters thoughtfully and carefully."

Daniel R. White, City of Yuma

Dan began his legal career as a clerk at the federal defender’s office and later served as a clerk to the Honorable Margaret H. Downie in Division One of the Arizona Court of Appeals. He worked at the Yuma County Attorney’s Office assisting in the civil division before joining the City of Yuma. Dan is also the immediate past president of the Yuma County Bar Association where under his leadership he organized the participation of appellate judges in continuing legal education courses and arranged for the Arizona Supreme Court justices to hold a series of oral arguments in Yuma. The Justices visited Yuma for several days, hearing two oral arguments, appearing at local high schools, and enjoying a tri-tip cookout with the Yuma County Bar Association. In his personal time, Dan coaches youth sport leagues and is highly active in his church.

For Dan’s nomination, Rodney Short, Deputy City Attorney, highlighted Dan’s 2017 legislative successes - the inclusion of water retention basins in Arizona’s improvement district and representing the interests of the smaller jurisdictions in the small cell negotiations. Rodney stated that Dan “is funny without being cynical and smart without being condescending. Clients listen to him and look past his age and time in service.” And with such a small office, Dan is the youngest attorney but he “has taken the lead” at times and the “older lawyers regularly go to Dan when we need assistance” in certain legal areas.

Congratulations to Kim and Dan for their excellence in serving the public and the legal profession, their personal and professional contributions to the community, and their professionalism, exemplary integrity, diligence and personal conduct.
